Hello, dear ones -
Summer is ripening in my corner of the world right now, though it's been a strange one. Some days, unseasonably cool. Others, unseasonably hot. Drought, then a week of steady rain. The Earth seems to be mirroring back to us just how much we've lost the middle way. How much it's become normal for us to swing between extremes. To think only of destinations and speed up or zone out the journey between.
I have some travel coming up in July and August and I was debating between flying or driving. In the end, I decided that for this cross-continent trip, driving would take too much precious time and energy I need to be directing towards other projects. So I bought plane tickets. And while I appreciate the efficient speed of air travel ("convenience" seems too generous a word for how humans are treated by airlines in this day and age. Talk about dehumanizing...); I will miss traveling over the land at something much faster than, yet closer to, human speed. There's something to be said for letting things take the time they take and not cutting corners, not bypassing the payment of our time and energy. Flying might take less time, but it doesn't sidestep that debt. I always have to plan a couple of days after plane travel to let my whole self catch up with my physical body. And spend some more time on the land, making offerings to offset the abruptness of my arrival. People rarely like a guest who drops abruptly into the middle of their house with no warning, no knock, no slow, mutually-consenting approach. The land and the presences who live there are rarely different.
One of the things I loved about my vinyasa yoga practice; an asana practice characterized by continual, flowing movement; was how its structure let me practice transitioning. Not jerking myself from one shape to another, one experience to the next. But rather letting each moment be its own complete arrival - including being fully present and "arrived" in all the midpoints between each pose's peak expression.
I think about that practice now and how it was a form of animist practice, though I didn't have those words for it at the time. It was teaching me something of waxing and waning; of cycles of build up, hold, release, and hold again. Like square breathing, if you've ever practiced that. Or - like the sun as it flows through the year and the solstices and equinoxes along the way.
As we move towards summer in the Northern Hemisphere and the peak expression of the sun's light, these in between moments still matter, much like the in-between temperatures I'm craving. The ones which help my body slowly transition between seasons.
We humans might do well to let listen for what Nature is mirroring to us about our own imbalanced patterns. As well as the patterns which would align us again with Life.
If you're traveling this summer, is there a way you can make a ritual of the journey, not just the destination?
June Updates:
I've paused most things, other than 1:1 clients and the occasional event/workshop, so I can continue giving my attention to the growing of a body of work and the deep listening needed to, to the best of my ability, ensure it will be of useful and relevant service in these times we're in and the ones I sense coming. Bit-by-bit, you'll see my website be updated, some current offerings refreshed. And some new offerings coming to be.
I do have a few slots for new 1:1 clients (these are remote sessions, as in - no need to travel to get to me. We connect over Zoom, cameras off unless you need the visual to help you focus).
And a few opportunities for in-person gatherings coming up in June - offering mini sessions at an event, a workshop, and a ceremony.
And I might offer another few online trial runs of some practices. I'll keep you posted on those.

#2
IN-PERSON (Delaplane, VA) - Trusting the Path: a summer solstice ceremony honoring Land and Process at Arterra Wines. This ceremony came about as I was talking with friend and Arterra and Hawkmoth Arts owner, Sandy, about the April freeze damage to their crops. We talked about our mutual past experiences of frustration and feeling disheartened when we encountered setbacks. But we both also noted how something had gradually been shifting for us over the years and now we were both noticing, in our respective crafts, where our trust in the path and in Mystery, or Spirit, to co-create with us had grown. Our more reflexive instinct was now to, as Ted Lasso encourages: "be curious, not judgemental." To lean back and listen in to whatever course-correction or realignment was inviting us through the things we never would've chosen.
And in that conversation, I felt a nudge from Spirit: "should we do a ceremony to honor the land and share about these lessons?" Both Sandy and Jason were a yes. Summer solstice, the very beginning of the harvest times and the pause as we shift to waning light felt like the perfect time. And we're opening it up to any of you who feel called and can make it to the winery to join us.
Sandy and Jason, as artist and winemaker, are both incredible artisans and practitioners of craft and land stewardship as a way of being in right relationship with the natural world. They'll bring their experience and share how they practice relationship with "their" land and vines. And I'll be bringing ceremony, myth, and other animist folk practice. Together, we'll explore how these more ancestral ways of relating to the world might help us build more resilience, capacity, and skill for dancing with Mystery in our lives and in these times.

#3
IN-PERSON (Seven Corners, VA) Living as Creature, Not Machine. Another chance to catch my signature workshop - this one will be a two-hour version, offered through Mind Your Body Oasis. So far, I've mostly been aiming for 60-90min versions of this workshop. And attendees all report there being so much to take in, that I've been having to cut back and simplify what I'm delivering so it's digestible. So I'm excited for 2hrs to sink a bit deeper and hold the ideas and practices with a bit more spaciousness.
In this introductory workshop we’ll explore how living as a machine is showing up in our lives - what it gives us and what it costs us; and begin remembering the animist and ancestral wisdom and practices which can help us:
- ground into our bodies and live more in rhythm with the seasons and the natural world;
- relate from our hearts and nervous systems, not our heads, so we feel deeper, truer connection;
- and remember the gifts of our ancestors, not just their wounds, so we experience more meaning and belonging in this wondrous world.
We won’t solve everything in one workshop. But we’ll take some solid first steps into understanding your human self - your body, your nervous system, your need for connection and a deeper sense of spiritual meaning. And this just might help give you enough courage to let the superhuman you crumble and surrender to your own wild, sacred journey.
Saturday, June 27th; 1-3pm ET.
Register through the MYBO events page here. (There's early bird pricing until June 8).
iNSPIRATION and Beauty:
I've been jamming out to this song when I need to move some energy through my body. So I can be more available to Presence and Spirit when encountering all the things that I never would've chosen but which I'm choosing to trust are invitations deeper into my humanity in some way.
"Portals" by Christian Löffler (ft. Mogli):
with Big Love and prayers for wild mercy upon us,
